Florida Discount Car Insurance

Searching for Florida discount car insurance?  Well this website will help you search through leading auto insurers to find the cheapest price with the coverage you need.  The first thing you will need to understand is the basics of Florida auto insurance: what is required, what is suggested, and then most of all, how to save money on it.  We will explain the basics of car insurance in Florida, and then show you how to save with different discounts.

The Basics Of Florida Discount Car Insurance

A good place to start is to know which coverage for auto insurance is required and at what limits.  Here are some key ones to know:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP):  This mandatory coverage includes medical, disability and death benefits.  This coverage provides a limit of $10,000 per person, per occurrence.
  • Property Damage (PD):  This required liability coverage will cover if you or another covered driver is found at-fault in an accident.  It covers some legal costs if a lawsuit is involved, but mainly it is there to cover the damages to the car or property you damaged.  The minimum requirement for this coverage is also set at $10,000.

The remaining coverage’s are considered optional by Florida, but are highly recommended by your auto insurer and especially your lien holder:

  1. Bodily Injury (BI):  This liability coverage again kicks in if you or another covered driver is found at-fault in an accident.  This covers for medical payments, some legal counsel if a lawsuit is involved, pain and suffering and lost wages.
  2. Uninsured/Underinsured Bodily Injury (UMBI):  This optional coverage will protect you if you are in an accident that was the other cars fault, but they either have no coverage or don’t have adequate coverage to pay for your medical injuries.  This comes with a stacking option, which means that if you have 2 cars on the policy and have your limits set at $50,000/$100,000 per person, per occurrence, you actually get double the coverage at $100,000/$200,000.
  3. Medical Payments:  This coverage will protect you and your passengers if medical injuries arise out of an accident, whether you are at-fault or not at-fault.
  4. Comprehensive:  This is a coverage for the vehicle only, and will be required if you have a lien holder.  Comprehensive covers for acts of nature such as falling objects, fire, theft or vandalism, some damage from hitting animals and glass damage.
  5. Collision:  This coverage is usually determined if it is necessary by the age of the vehicle, however if it is financed, the lien holder will typically require this coverage.  This will cover repairs to your vehicle after an at-fault accident.

So how do you decide which coverage to pick and at what limits?  It all depends on your vehicle.  If you own the title to the vehicle all that is required by the state is to carry PD and PIP at limits of $10,000.  However, if you have a loan or lease out on the vehicle, the company you finance through will most likely require certain limits for liability, comprehensive and collision.  While one way to save money is to carry lower limits, it always is recommended to carry high limits in case of a severe accident or lawsuit.
